History is a lively and concrete reality that you can breathe in these territories and which is witnessed by castles, stone bridges, towers erected to defend themselves from pirates, abbeys and monasteries. The turreted castles are an expression of the possessions of the Doria, Fieschi, Malaspina, and Spinola, the noble families who ruled and fought over the valleys of Genoa for centuries. Moreover, the Republic built its own aqueduct to supply both the town and the ships landing here from all over the Mediterranean. Also monasteries are a valuable evidence of the intricate events through which faith and spirituality intertwines with the political and military power and with everyday lives of people who lived in the villages.
