The hamlet of San Fruttuoso, located in a small bay to the south of the promontory, can only be reached by properly marked foot paths or by boat from the sea. The Abbey of San Fruttuoso of Capodimonte dates back to the tenth century. For centuries it remained under the rule of the Doria family; it preserves the small two levels cloister enclosed by two rows of arcades and the tombs of the Doria in the crypt. The bay is overlooked by the tower.

It seems that the defensive stronghold was built in medieval times and has always been used for military functions. It's likely that the Romans have secured one of their "stations" in the ancient Portus Delphinis and they have built a "Castrum" and a "turris", as it was done in their use anywhere, when they were building their strategic locations. It's also likely that they have built a tower in the same place, where the tower that we see today stands.

Important under a historical and architectural point of view, it is one of the few remaining buildings that once operated like "courthouses" of the Republic of Genoa. The word "paxi" or "pages" was used, in the past, to distinguish the ancient Roman villages, though scholars of Genoese language claim that the noun expresses the concept of "place where you re-establish peace" and it is due to the existence of buildings used, precisely, for the administration of justice and to monitor compliance with laws relating to public policy, tax obligations, government, healthcare. These buildings were provided with hearing rooms, prisons, local housing staff, stables, storehouses for weapons, equipment for water supply and water storage tanks.

Of great architectural interest, the castle is a unique example of its kind in the Stura valley. The tower, taller than 22 meters, Is the oldest part and has a diameter of almost 6 meters. The restoration work took place in the 90s, preserving the ancient elements, making so possible the use of the tower and hex body. From the castle, and even more from the top of the tower, you have a magnificent view.
