Rebuilt in 1726 on the ruins due to the sudden collapse of the previous church - dating back to 1130 - it encloses works of artistic value by Anton Maria Maragliano and a Ultima Cena by the school of Luca Cambiaso, born in Moneglia.
The church has fifteenth century origins, and it’s the work of the Benedictine monks, followed later by the Franciscans, while the convent and the two cloisters assumed the current structure in 1600. Inside it contains works of great value, including the wooden group of St. George and the Dragon, by the Maragliano school; the polyptych by Giovanni da Pisa dedicated to San Lorenzo, dating back to the last years of ‘300/first years of ‘400; the altarpiece dedicated to San Ludovico da Tolosa dated early '500 by Giovanni Barbagelata, "the Adoration of the Magi" by Luca Cambiaso and the painting of "St. George slaying the dragon", located in the upper vault of the presbytery and attributed to Rubens.
When you come to Moneglia you can't but be conquered by its beaches. An unbroken expanse of sand, characterized by both public and equipped beaches. The bathing season lasts from early spring until late October, thanks to the extremely mild climate of this coast.
A modern seaside resort of the eastern Riviera, Moneglia lies in the Gulf between Punta Moneglia and Punta Rospo, stretched between the sea and scented vineyards, pine and chestnut woods. The town, situated on a strategic commercial route, along via Aurelia, has ancient origins: monilia being the Roman term for jewellery.
